Centurion Way
Centurion Way Railway Path is a 5.5 mile (9km) off-road route running from Chichester to West Dean via Lavant, following the old Chichester to Midhurst railway line. It is a lovely local option for walking, cycling and getting out into the South Downs.
The route starts near Bishop Luffa School in Chichester, passes through Lavant and finishes at West Dean. West Sussex County Council says it is mostly flat or only slightly hilly. The southern section is tarmacked, while the stretch from Lavant to West Dean is compacted stone. At the West Dean end there are steps, but there is also a cycle ramp suitable for most wheelchairs and pushchairs.
It is also useful for linking up with other places. The route connects with the South Coast Cycle Route at Fishbourne, and nearby attractions include West Dean Gardens, the Weald & Downland Living Museum and Fishbourne Roman Palace. For practical planning, the council page links to Traveline for bus times and notes that the 60 bus runs regularly between the start and finish points.
