A brief outline of Oaklands Park follows…

“Oaklands Park is a wonderful green space in the heart of Chichester, which includes high quality venues for culture, sport and leisure.
Our association, the Friends of Oaklands Park was formed two years ago to protect and treasure the park for its biodiversity and the opportunities it offers to the community. Since then we have organised a number of events such as tree walks, talks about the history of the park, hedge planting and fruit harvesting.”

City Green spaces are under threats and need protecting. This article describes current proposals to nibble away at its size. Please note this is David Cooke's personal opinion and does not state official Association policy. He can be a bit of a dreamer sometimes!

The Park hosts a surprisingly large number of organisations and activities e.g.

• Chichester District Council (owns and manages the Colts Pavilion),
• Children's play equipment,
• The Tennis Courts,
• The Northgate Carparks,
• The Rugby Club,
• The Pistol and Rifle Club,
• The University of Chichester, (who occupy and use Oaklands House)
• Chichester Archers,
• Chichester Football Club,
• The Chichester Racquets Club,
• The Chichester Festival Theatre and The Minerva Theatre,
• Caper and Berry,
• Transitions Chichester.
• Chichester Runners Fri 10:30
• WALX Nordic Walkers Tues 10:30 & Friday 10:00 & 11:00.
• There seem to be at least two Geocaches here (untested).

Other regular groups hosted by the Park include…

• Circus Zyair,
• The Chichester Cheese and Chilli Festival,
• The Park Run,
• The Soft Ball Club (The Chichester Falcons)…
  

But there are also many occasional events hosted in the Park, such as

• Cycle Group Get-togethers,
• Food Events,
• Music Events.
  
• Open air cinema

• Exercising,
• Football Knockabouts and Practice,
• Rugby Practice,
• Nature Appreciation,
• Tree Surveying,
• Orchard, Garden and Nature-strip Visits,
• Picnics,
• Children’s Play.
  

We are investigating QR codes for the park as well as considering and costing possibilities such as installing a new bench, and bird and bat boxes.
We have just completed planting a new hedgerow, in partnership with the Festival Theatre and Transitions Chichester.

FoOP are a small local dedicated group, come and join us by following this link. Currently membership is just £5 per year.

We have recently organised social events. There will be a meeting on 7th March with lecture by Mr Alan Green on the history of Oaklands Park.
